Etchically sourced down in all Norvegr duvets and pillows

The recent few years there has been a growing interest for animal welfare when buying down duvets and pillows, and this we are happy to see. Animal welfare is absolutely crucial to everyone that works at Norvegr. Therefore, all the down that goes into our products is guaranteed to be ethically sourced.

  • Ethically sourced down in all Norvegr products

The eiderdown that we use for our Limited Edition duvets comes from abandoned Eider duck nests on the Norwegian island of Svalbard. After midsummer the mother duck and its ducklings leave the nest and head for the sea until next year. We then get to pick eider down from the abandoned nests, and we never touch the birds. The mother duck had previously plucked this down off her own chest to feather the nest. Next year, the birds return and we get to repeat the process again when they leave. For our Standard, Classic and Premium Collection duvets and pillows, the down comes from slaughtered birds and is a bi product of meat production.

Our family has made duvets and pillows at our factory in Trondheim, Norway since the 1950s. We have always been very strict when deciding which suppliers to work with. Therefore, we work only with a select few suppliers of down and feathers, and these we have worked with for decades. All of them are located in Europe and they all hold several certificates confirming that their businesses put animal welfare front and center. We strongly object to any form of live plucking of down, and so do they. In any case, we demand certificates ensuring that absolutely all down that we use is a bi product of birds that have already been slaughtered, and never comes from live plucking.

The certificates our suppliers hold include, among others, traceability - showing which farm or slaughter house the down comes form. These certificates are issued by neutral institutes that have gone through accounting, books and papers to ensure that the amount of down that is bought from farms and slaughter houses matches the amount that they sell. Our suppliers are randomly audited, as well as audited according to schedules, to ensure that they adhere to the standards set out by the institutes, allowing them to keep their certificates. Being able to trace each shipment of down back to each farm or slaughter house ensures that no live plucking occurs. The audits are done by the conformity assessment company DIN CERTCO.

Every shipment of down that we receive includes a veterinary certificate and our suppliers certificates include “EDFA Traceability Standard Compliance Certificate” and "Traumpass" to ensure that their down is traceable, not from live plucking and that the birds are treated well.
