LONG BEFORE MODERN LUXURIES, there was a material that stood out as nature’s most understated masterpiece: eiderdown. For the Vikings this light-as-air resource was not simply a symbol of wealth, it was a mark of reverence that was reserved for those of extraordinary status.

Queen Åsa of Agder was a near-mythical Norse matriarch and mother to King Halfdan the Black. In 834 AD she was laid to rest in the majestic Oseberg Ship, leading to one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the Viking era. Her burial was not only framed by examples of exquisite Norse craftsmanship but layered in symbolism that spoke to the Queen’s high regard. Among the treasures entombed with her was an ornate bed showcasing some of the finest textiles ever uncovered from that time, and tucked inside the pillows and beneath the covers was thick, luxuriant eiderdown.

It was a deliberate gesture of honour, proof that more than a millennium ago, down was recognised as a gift from nature worthy of royalty. This long-held belief has shaped us at Norvegr.
